Jedlik Ányos Energy Storage Support – What It Really Means for C&I Companies

The Jedlik Ányos Energy Programme energy storage support scheme is not just a subsidy programme.

By supporting battery energy storage systems (BESS), the programme addresses the key limitations of renewable energy use: grid constraints, feed-in limits, and the mismatch between generation and consumption.

A properly designed C&I energy storage system does not simply absorb public funding — it generates measurable business value through cost optimisation and risk reduction.

For commercial and industrial (C&I) companies, it is a financial and operational lever that enables:

  • lower electricity costs,

  • controlled peak demand and demand charges,

  • reduced exposure to energy price volatility,

  • and improved long-term competitiveness.

Who Is Eligible?

The support is available to Hungarian-based enterprises that:

  • have a registered seat or branch office in Hungary,

  • hold a valid Hungarian tax number,

  • have at least one closed financial year,

  • operate under one of the following legal forms:

    • Ltd. (Kft.), partnership (Bt., Kkt.), Plc. (Rt.), sole enterprise, cooperative

    • or nonprofit Ltd./Plc.

This includes typical C&I energy storage users such as manufacturers, logistics centres, commercial facilities, cold storage operators and industrial service providers.

Financial Framework – Executive Summary

  • Total budget: HUF 50 billion

    • HUF 25 billion reserved exclusively for SMEs

  • Grant size: HUF 10 million – HUF 1 billion

  • Support intensity: 30–50%

  • Advance payment: up to 30% of the awarded grant

In practice, this makes medium to large-scale C&I BESS projects (from 100 kW up to multi-MW containerised systems) financially viable with structured funding.

What Activities Are Eligible?

Mandatory Element

  • Procurement and installation of energy storage units

    (electrical or thermal energy storage)

This programme is storage-centric: energy storage is not an optional add-on, but the core investment.

Additional (Non-Standalone) Eligible Activities

Project Preparation

  • Feasibility studies

  • Engineering design and permitting

  • Public procurement procedures

  • Certification and technical documentation

Implementation

  • Renewable generation systems (PV, wind, heat pumps)

(up to max. 30% of total project value)

  • Energy Management Systems (EMS), monitoring and control software

  • Industrial hardware (controllers, industrial PCs)

  • Metering upgrades, phase expansion

  • Safety and fire protection systems

  • Grid connection works and construction activities

Key insight: real returns are not driven by the battery alone, but by the EMS logic, consumption profile and peak shaving strategy combined.

Ancillary Activities
  • Project management

  • Engineering and expert services

  • Site preparation

  • Mandatory communication and publicity

Exclusion Criteria – Common Pitfalls

Companies are not eligible if they, for example:

  • lack a registered Hungarian presence,

  • have outstanding public debts or insolvency proceedings,

  • fail to meet environmental compliance requirements,

  • have unresolved EU grant repayment obligations,

  • face conflicts of interest or final criminal judgments.

BST.SOLAR experience: these risks can be identified early through proper technical, legal and financial pre-assessment.

Mandatory Commitments – Often Underestimated

  • Full collateral is required for the entire advance payment.

  • At least 75% of the annual stored energy must originate from directly connected renewable sources.

Failure to meet this requirement may result in partial or full repayment of the grant.

This makes correct BESS sizing and EMS configuration critical already at the design stage.

The BST.SOLAR Perspective: Not a Grant, but a Business Decision

The Jedlik Ányos support delivers value only if:

  • peak shaving and demand charge reduction are quantified,

  • the kW / kWh ratio is based on real consumption data,

  • the EMS follows financial logic, not only technical rules,

  • the project is evaluated on a 10-year ROI horizon, not just CAPEX.

BST.SOLAR focuses on profit-driven C&I energy storage systems — from engineering and procurement to commissioning and long-term operation — ensuring that subsidies translate into sustainable business performance.
